For freedom Daphne traded limb and life

When Eros stripped Apollo’s reason

The love god’s revenge molded her afterlife

The sun god committed desp’rate treason

Pierced by Love’s spiteful golden arrow

When Eros stripped Apollo’s reason

Daphne fled, her evasion so narrow

Her hatred fueled by a shaft of lead

Transformed to a tree, skin to marrow

Never shall she fade or fall to earth, dead

But be evergreen with Apollo’s youth

Her hatred fueled by a shaft of lead

Whether Apollo’s chase be myth or truth

To frost, the Bay Laurel does not succumb

But be evergreen with Apollo’s youth

Since the day the sun god was overcome

To frost, the Bay Laurel does not succumb

For freedom Daphne traded limb and life

The love god’s revenge molded her afterlife
